FEPA P • Grit P40–P2000

Sandpaper from the manufacturer

Rolls, sheets, hook & loop discs, abrasive mesh and sanding sponges. Paper and cloth backing, waterproof SiC paper, aluminium oxide grain. Grit from P40 to P2000.

Sandpaper is a flexible abrasive on a paper or cloth backing coated with grain (aluminium oxide or silicon carbide). The FEPA number (P40…P2000) shows the grain size: the higher the number, the finer the grain and the smoother the finish. Use P40–P80 for heavy stock removal, P120–P240 to prepare for paint, and P800–P2000 for wet sanding of lacquer.

How to choose sandpaper

First define the task: heavy removal (P40–P80), preparation (P120–P240) or finishing (P320 and finer). Move between grits without skipping more than one step, otherwise scratches from the coarse grain will show under the paint.

Wet sanding needs waterproof silicon carbide (SiC) paper, available as 230×280 mm sheets. For machine sanding take hook & loop discs with dust-extraction holes; for filler take mesh, which does not clog.

Aluminium oxide is universal for wood, metal and filler; silicon carbide is sharper and intended for lacquer, plastics and wet sanding.

Frequently asked questions

What does the number on sandpaper mean?
It is the FEPA P grit: the sieve number the grain was screened through — the higher the number, the finer the grain. P40 is coarse grain for heavy removal, P2000 is very fine for wet finish sanding.
Which sandpaper for wall filler?
For rough levelling of filler use P80–P120, for the final coat before painting P180–P240. Abrasive mesh is more convenient: it does not clog with dust.
How does waterproof paper differ from ordinary?
Waterproof paper has a latex-impregnated backing and silicon carbide grain; it can be wetted so it does not clog or heat the lacquer. Ordinary aluminium oxide paper is for dry sanding only.
Which sandpaper suits wood?
For rough work P60–P80, for preparation before lacquer P120–P180, for sanding between coats of lacquer P240–P320. For solid wood take aluminium oxide on paper backing.
