NovoAbrasive 125 mm grinding discs

Why the 125 mm grinding disc is the basic tool

125 mm is the most common angle grinder size, so a 125 mm grinding disc is found in every workshop, on every construction site and in every plant. The depressed centre (type 27) lets you work with the face of the disc at 15–30° without the nut touching the surface, and the 6–8 mm thickness gives a safety margin for removing welds, chamfers and burrs.

NovoAbrasive makes grinding discs on Davide Maternini (Italy) equipment with grain from Saint-Gobain and Imerys; every batch is tested by the oSa method, and the products are MPA Hannover certified and comply with EN 12413.

6 or 8 mm thick: which to choose

ThicknessApplicationAdvantagesFor whom
6 mmCleaning welds, removing burrs, chamfers on thin metalLighter, more manoeuvrable, finer controlDaily workshop use
8 mmHeavy stock removal, large welds, cast iron, castingsLonger life and rigidity, less vibrationConstruction, industrial plants

Rule: the more metal you need to remove per pass, the thicker the disc. A 6 mm disc suits grinders up to 1000 W; for tools from 1200 W take 8 mm.

Abrasive and series

Aluminium oxide (corundum)— the universal grain of the Standard and Profi series for structural steel, pipes, profiles and cast iron. Stable wear, predictable life.

Ceramic aluminium oxide— the self-sharpening grain of the Extreme series: the grain fractures in use and exposes new cutting edges, so the disc removes metal faster and keeps its performance longer on stainless and alloy steels.

Series: Standard (NovoAbrasive Standard, Hetman brands) — household and occasional work; Profi (NovoAbrasive Profi, WellCut) — daily professional work, MPA Hannover certified; Extreme — industrial conditions with maximum stock removal.

How to work with a 125 mm grinding disc

  • Hold the grinder at 15–30° to the surface: at a smaller angle the disc skips, at a larger one it digs in and leaves grooves.
  • Never cut with a grinding disc: it is designed for face loads, not edge loads. Use a 125 mm cutting disc for cutting.
  • Work only with the guard and a flange that matches type 27; check that the grinder speed does not exceed 12,200 rpm.
  • Inspect the disc for chips and cracks before mounting, then let it run idle for 30 seconds.

    Frequently asked questions

How does a grinding disc differ from a cutting disc?
A grinding disc is 6–8 mm thick with a depressed centre (type 27); it works with its face and removes a layer of metal. A cutting disc is thin (1–3 mm, type 41 or 42) and works with its edge. Cutting with a grinding disc or grinding with a cutting disc is not allowed — it is a safety violation.
Is a 125 mm grinding disc suitable for stainless steel?
Yes. For stainless steel take Profi or Extreme discs marked INOX — they contain no iron, sulphur or chlorine, so they leave no rust stains on the surface. The Extreme ceramic grain works fastest on stainless.
At what angle should the grinder be held when grinding?
The optimum angle is 15–30° between the disc face and the workpiece. This way the wear-resistant zone of the disc does the work, metal is removed evenly, and the disc does not dig in or vibrate.
How long does a 125 mm grinding disc last?
Life depends on the series, pressure, grinder power and material. An Extreme disc with ceramic grain lasts noticeably longer than Standard on the same job; we do not quote exact figures because they differ several times between a weld and a casting.
Which grinder do I need for a 125 mm grinding disc?
Any 125 mm angle grinder with a 22.23 mm bore and a maximum speed of no more than 12,200 rpm. For 8 mm discs a tool from 1200 W is more comfortable — it does not lose speed under load.
