Acoustic method for controlling the hardness of abrasive wheels. Sound index.

Acoustic method for controlling the hardness of abrasive wheels. Sound index.

The NovoAbrasive abrasive plant has introduced an additional stage of controlling the physical and mechanical properties (hardness control) of the abrasive tool by determining the sound index.

This control method provides the ability to determine whether the recipe adopted for this designation is being followed.

The method of controlling the hardness of an abrasive tool is based on determining the speed of propagation of acoustic waves (speed of sound Cl), which is closely related to the formulation characteristics of abrasive wheels, their operational indicators, and can be calculated quite quickly and accurately based on the results of measuring the natural frequencies of oscillations (FRE) of the controlled product.

Acoustic method for controlling the hardness of abrasive wheels. Sound index.

The use of the acoustic method to control the physical and mechanical properties of abrasive tools is regulated by the state standard DSTU GOST 21963: 2003 "Cutting-off discs. Technical conditions".

Hardness is one of the main characteristics of abrasive wheels and therefore great attention must be paid to its control.

Frequently asked questions

What is the sound index of an abrasive disc?

A measure derived from the speed of acoustic waves through the disc. That speed is closely tied to the disc's formulation and its performance characteristics.

Why use acoustic hardness testing?

It allows a fast and accurate check that the formulation specified for that disc designation has been followed.

Which standard governs the method?

DSTU GOST 21963:2003 'Cutting discs. Technical specifications'.
