Key facts
Company history: from Swarovski to world leader
The history of Tyrolit is inextricably linked to the name of Daniel Swarovski, the founder of the world-famous crystal empire. In 1895, Swarovski founded a crystal production company in Wattens, Austria, using a revolutionary method of automatic crystal cutting. This process required high-quality grinding wheels.
The First World War (1914–1918) interrupted the supply of abrasive wheels from abroad, putting Swarovski's crystal production at risk. This forced Daniel Swarovski to develop his own grinding wheel production. On February 13, 1919, the Tyrolit company was officially registered in the nearby town of Schwatz - initially exclusively to meet the domestic needs of the crystal business.
The name Tyrolit comes from Tirol, the Austrian federal state where both Schwatz and Wattens are located. The suffix “-lit” is associated with minerals and stones, emphasizing the company’s abrasive specialization.
Key development milestones
Tyrolit is unique in that it is part of the Swarovski Group, one of Austria's largest private companies. The group combines three main business areas: Swarovski Crystal Business (crystal and jewelry), Tyrolit (abrasives and diamond tools) and Swarovski Optik (optical devices). The company has remained under family management by Daniel Swarovski's descendants for over 100 years.

Diamond tools for construction
Tyrolit is one of the world leaders in the segment of diamond tools for construction. This is one of the key areas that distinguishes the company from most competitors:
- Diamond saw blades - for table, hand and wall saws. Cutting concrete, reinforced concrete, stone, brick, asphalt
- Diamond core drills - for drilling holes in concrete and reinforced concrete with diameters from 10 to 600+ mm
- Wire cutting systems - diamond wires for cutting large concrete structures during demolition
- Wall and floor saws - complete systems for cutting walls and ceilings
- Grinding cups and segments - for preparing concrete floors and surfaces
Technology and innovation
Tyrolit invests significant resources in research and development, maintaining its position as a technological leader in the abrasive industry. The main R&D center is located in Schwabach, where dozens of engineers and materials scientists work.
CERABOND — ceramic grain
CERABOND is Tyrolit's proprietary ceramic abrasive grain technology. The microcrystalline grain structure ensures that the cutting edges are constantly renewed during operation, ensuring consistently high performance over the entire service life of the wheel. Wheels with CERABOND demonstrate significantly higher material removal rates and longer service lives compared to standard abrasives.
Ceramic Bonding
Tyrolit has deep expertise in the production of vitrified bond wheels. This technology is critical for precision grinding in the automotive and aerospace industries, where precision requirements are measured in microns. Proprietary bond formulations allow the wheels to be optimized for specific applications.
Diamond sawing and drilling
In the segment of construction diamond tools, Tyrolit develops advanced technologies:
- Segmented diamond blades - optimized diamond concentration and segment design for different types of concrete
- Laser welding technology - connecting diamond segments to a steel body for maximum safety
- Wet and dry cutting systems - adapted solutions for different working conditions
- Vacuum brazing technology— for high-performance diamond core drills
Certifications and standards
- ISO 9001— quality management system (all production sites)
- ISO 14001— environmental management system
- MPA - Materialprüfungsanstalt certification (independent safety testing of abrasives)
- oSa is a member of the Organization for the Safety of Abrasives. Safety and compliance testing
- FEPA— member of the Federation of European Producers of Abrasives (industry standardization)
- Compliance with EN 12413 (safety requirements for bonded abrasive tools)
Markets and distribution
Tyrolit is present in over 65 countries on all continents. The distribution network includes its own subsidiaries, regional sales offices and authorized dealers. The company has its strongest positions in Europe (especially in the DACH region - Germany, Austria, Switzerland), North America and Asia.
