🏭 FEPA: The organization that has been setting standards for the abrasive industry for 70 years

🏭 FEPA: The organization that has been setting standards for the abrasive industry for 70 years

FEPA: The organization that has been setting standards in the abrasive industry for 70 years 🏭

If you work with abrasives, you already use FEPA standards. Even if you don’t know it! 😉
When you see P80 on sandpaper or F60 on a cutting wheel, these are not just numbers. They are the result of almost 70 years of work by one organization that has shaped the global rules of the game in the abrasives industry.
Meet: FEPA— Federation of European Abrasives Manufacturers 🇪🇺

📊 FEPA in numbers:

🗓 Founded: 1955 📈 Market coverage: 90%+ European manufacturers 🏢 Member companies: 220+ 🌍 Countries: 17 👨‍🔬 Technical experts: 70+ 💶 Total turnover of members: €3.5 billion 🚢 Exports outside Europe: 35% of production

🎯 Why is FEPA important?

1️⃣ Standards that the whole world knows

The FEPA grain size system has become the global benchmark:
▪️ P-grit (P12 → P2500) — for sandpaper and belts ▪️ F-grit (F4 → F1200) — for grinding wheels ▪️ D/B prefix— for diamond and CBN superabrasives
When you order P120 in Germany, Italy or China, you get the same result. This is the merit of FEPA! ✅

2️⃣ Security is not an option, but a standard ⚠️

The reinforced cutting wheel on the grinder operates at a speed of 80 m/s. When broken, the fragments fly at a speed of 288 km/h! 😱
FEPA has developed: ✔️ EN safety standards for all types of abrasives ✔️ Instructions for safe use (free!) ✔️ Product labeling requirements ✔️ Training programs for professionals
Products with EN marking = tested according to European safety standards 🛡

3️⃣ Sustainable development is a competitive advantage 🌱

In 2020, FEPA launched the SEAM (Sustainable European Abrasive Manufacturers) program.
In 2021, SEAM received the EU certification mark from EUIPO! 🏆
The three pillars of SEAM:
🌿 Ecology— waste reduction, energy efficiency, carbon footprint reduction
👥 Social responsibility— employee safety, inclusion, diversity
💼 Economy— investments in R&D, innovation processes
SEAM participants' results for 2021: 📉 Reduction in unused waste: -3.1% 📈 Increase in diversity & inclusion: +100% 📉 Reduction in sick leave: -22% ✅ Achieving R&D investment goals
21+ manufacturers and 4 national associations are already in the program!

📈 Four segments, one voice

FEPA unites all areas of the abrasive industry:
⚙️ Bonded Abrasives— grinding wheels, cutting discs, precision tools
📄 Coated Abrasives— sandpaper, belts, flap discs, non-woven abrasive
💎 Superabrasives— diamond and CBN tools for precision grinding
🔸 Grains— abrasive grain (aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, and others)

🆕 What's new in 2024-2025?

New leadership

In June 2024, a new Management Committee was elected: 👔 President: Stefan Haag (Husqvarna Group) 👔 Vice President: Eric Verhimst (3M EMEA)

EPD for abrasives

In June 2024, EPD International published c-PCR-030, the first Product Category Rule for abrasives. This means: ✔️ A standardized way to assess environmental impact ✔️ Transparency for customers ✔️ Preparation for future EU regulatory requirements

New members

2025 brought new members: 🆕 TMPrecision (July 2025) 🆕 Münzing (April 2025) — associate member 🆕 Sundisc Abrasives (February 2025)

💡 What does this mean for you?

If you are an abrasives manufacturer:✔️ FEPA membership = access to standards development ✔️ SEAM participation = competitive advantage in ESG-sensitive markets ✔️ Technical expertise from 70+ specialists
If you are a distributor or end user:✔️ FEPA marking = quality and safety guarantee ✔️ EN standards = products tested according to European requirements ✔️ SEAM logo = sustainable manufacturer

🤔 Did you know?

💡 FEPA grain size standards define particle size as a range, not a single value. The distribution of macrograins is determined by sieve analysis, and micrograins by sedimentation.
💡 The European abrasives industry exports 35% of its products outside Europe — and FEPA standards are used everywhere.
💡 Reinforced grinder wheels, when broken, throw fragments at a speed of 288 km/h - that's why FEPA safety standards are so important!
Abrasives are not just a consumable. They are a critical link in the production chain of virtually every industry: from automotive to aerospace, from electronics to construction.
FEPA ensures that this link operates safely, efficiently and responsibly 💪

🇺🇦 NovoAbrasive: proudly part of the FEPA family

NovoAbrasive has been an individual member of FEPA since 2017 🎉
As a Ukrainian-Italian abrasives manufacturer from the Kharkiv region, we are proud to be part of this prestigious European federation.
