Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about diamond polishing discs

What are diamond polishing discs (shells)?
Diamond polishing discs (also known as “shells” due to their characteristic pattern) are flexible diamond-coated discs on a polymer base. They are attached to a backing plate with Velcro and are used for step-by-step polishing of stone.
How to choose the grit of a polishing wheel?
Start with coarse grits (P30–P60) to remove scratches and smooth out, then gradually move to fine grits (P400–P3000) to achieve a mirror-like shine. Each subsequent step removes scratches from the previous one.
Do you need water when working?
Wet processing is recommended. Water cools the diamond coating, prevents overheating, extends service life and improves surface quality. Some discs are suitable for dry processing, but the service life will be lower.
What kind of backing plate is needed?
You will need a rubber backing pad with Hook & Loop fastening and M14 thread for your angle grinder. The diameter of the backing pad should match the diameter of the polishing disc (100 or 125 mm).
At what speed should I work?
The recommended rotation speed is from 1500 to 4000 rpm, depending on the material and grit. For coarse grits (P30–P100) you can work faster, for finishing grits (P1500–P3000) you can work slower.
How many steps are required for complete polishing?
Usually 7–8 steps: P50 → P100 → P200 → P400 → P800 → P1500 → P3000. For granite, you can start with P30, for marble - with P100. Skipping steps is not recommended - this will worsen the result.
Are these discs suitable for dry polishing?
Some models are designed for both dry and wet applications. However, dry polishing will shorten the life of the disc and may result in a lower surface quality. Wet polishing will always give a better result.
How long does one polishing disc last?
The resource depends on the grit, the material to be treated and the intensity of use. On average, one disc is enough for 5–15 m² of surface. Coarse grits wear out faster, fine grits wear out slower.
