Frequently asked questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about NovoAbrasive abrasive wheels: product selection, safety of use, ordering and partnership.
About products
How do I choose the right abrasive wheel for my task?
The choice depends on the processing material, type of operation and instrument:
- Material: for metal use wheels marked A (aluminum oxide), for stone/concrete - C (silicon carbide)
- Diameter: should match your grinder (115, 125, 150, 180, 230 mm)
- Thickness: 1.0-1.6 mm for precision cutting, 2.0-3.0 mm for heavy duty work
- Speed: check that the maximum speed on the wheel is higher than the speed of your tool
Read a detailed guide on choosing abrasives in the Knowledge Portal.
What materials can be processed with NovoAbrasive wheels?
Our products are designed to process a wide range of materials:
- Metals: steel, cast iron, stainless steel (INOX), aluminum, non-ferrous metals
- Building materials: stone, concrete, brick, tile
- Ceramics: tiles, porcelain stoneware, porcelain
For each material there are specialized wheels with the optimal composition of abrasive and bond. Pay attention to the marking on the packaging.
What is the difference between cutting and grinding wheels?
Main differences:
- Cutting wheels (thickness 1.0-3.0 mm) - designed for cutting metal, stone and other materials. Thin, fast and clean cut.
- Grinding wheels (thickness 6.0-8.0 mm) - for grinding, deburring, preparing surfaces for welding. Thicker, withstand lateral load.
Important: never use a cutting wheel for grinding - it is dangerous!
What wheel sizes does NovoAbrasive produce?
We produce wheels of all standard sizes:
- Diameters: 115, 125, 150, 180, 230, 300, 350, 400 mm
- Thickness of cuttings: 1.0, 1.2, 1.6, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 mm
- Strip thickness: 6.0, 6.4, 8.0 mm
- Mounting hole: 22.23 mm (standard), 25.4 mm, 32 mm
We also manufacture custom-sized wheels for industrial customers.
What is the shelf life of abrasive wheels?
The expiration date is indicated on each circle. Usually:
- Cutting and grinding wheels: 3 years from date of manufacture
- Flap Discs (CLT): 5 years
- Velcro grinding wheels: 3 years
Storage conditions: dry room, temperature +5...+30 degrees, avoid moisture and direct sunlight. Circles with an expired date are prohibited from use!
What does the marking on the abrasive wheel mean?
The labeling contains all the necessary information for safe use:
- Abrasive type: A (aluminum oxide) - for metal, C (silicon carbide) - for stone
- Grit: The number after the letter (e.g. A24 is coarse, A60 is fine). The higher the number, the finer the grain.
- Bond hardness: Latin letter (R, S, T) - from soft to hard
- Type of binding: BF (Bakelite on fabric backing) - the most common
- Dimensions: diameter × thickness × fit (e.g. 125×1.0×22.23)
- Max RPM: A number that must not be exceeded
- Production date and expiration date
Read more about labeling in the Knowledge Portal.
What grain size should I choose for my task?
Grain size (grit) determines the cleanliness of the finish and the speed of material removal:
- P24–P40 (coarse grain): fast removal of large layers of material, rough grinding, cleaning of welds
- P60–P80 (medium grain): general purpose sanding, surface preparation, paint and rust removal
- P100–P120 (fine grain): finishing metal, preparation for painting
- P150–P240 (fine grain): finishing, sanding wood, interlayer sanding
- P320+ (very fine grain): polishing, finishing before coating
Rule: start with coarse grit and gradually move to finer grit for best results.
Security
Why is it important to maintain maximum RPM?
Exceeding the maximum rotation speed can lead to wheel breakage and serious injury.
- Always check that the maximum speed on the wheel is HIGHER than or EQUAL to the speed of your tool.
- For example: a wheel marked 12,250 RPM can be used on a grinder with a maximum speed of 11,000 RPM
- Never remove the protective cover from the tool.
The maximum speed is always indicated on the wheel label and in the tool instructions.
What protective equipment is needed when working with abrasives?
Mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE):
- Safety glasses or mask - protect eyes from sparks and particles
- Protective gloves - protect hands from cuts and burns
- Protective clothing - tight, without loose elements
- Respirator - when working with stone, concrete (dust)
- Headphones or earplugs - for prolonged work
Also: use a protective cover on the grinder, work in a well-ventilated area.
What certificates do NovoAbrasive products have?
Our products meet the highest safety standards:
- MPA Hannover (Germany) - independent abrasive safety testing
- EN 12413 - European standard for bonded abrasives
- ISO 9001:2015 - quality management system
- oSa - Organisation for the Safety of Abrasives certification
- FEPA - membership in the European Federation of Abrasives Manufacturers
Read more about certificates on the Certificates page.
What to do if the wheel is damaged?
Never use a damaged wheel! Even a small crack can lead to breakage during operation.
- Before installation, visually inspect the wheel for cracks, chips, deformations
- Do a "sound test" - tap the circle lightly, it should make a clear ringing sound
- Dispose of the damaged wheel safely.
- If you find a factory defect, contact us for a replacement.
How to properly install a wheel on a grinder (KShM)?
Correct installation is the key to safe operation:
- Turn off the tool and unplug it before changing the wheel.
- Check compatibility: the wheel diameter and mounting hole must match the tool
- Check RPM: the maximum speed of the wheel should be higher or equal to the speed of the grinder
- Install the flanges: the outer flange should press the circle tightly against the inner one
- Tighten the nut: by hand or with a wrench, without excessive force
- Install the protective cover before turning on.
- Idle for 30 seconds at maximum speed before starting work.
